Short Term Work & Training Visa
Australia offers several visa options for short-term work and training purposes. These visas are ideal for individuals who need to come to Australia for temporary employment, training or professional development.
Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist) Visa – Subclass 400
The Highly Specialised Work stream of this temporary visa lets you do short-term, highly specialised work in Australia. It is suitable if you have specialised skills, knowledge or experience not generally available in Australia. It also covers work related to Australian interests, such as participation in events or short-term work for overseas employers.
This visa is typically granted for 3 months but can be extended up to 6 months in certain circumstances.
You must show that you have specialized skills or knowledge that cannot reasonably be found in Australia and demonstrate that the work is non-ongoing or of a specific nature.
You must demonstrate that you have the financial capacity to support themselves during their stay.
You must prove that you intend to stay in Australia temporarily and will leave when your visa expires according to Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) guidelines.
Temporary Work (International Relations) visa (subclass 403)
A temporary visa to work in specific circumstances that improve Australia’s international relations.
The following streams fall under Temporary Work (International Relations) visa:
- Government Agreement stream
This visa stream allows a person to work in Australia under the terms and conditions of a bilateral agreement between the Australian Government or a state/territory government and a government of another country. - Foreign Government Agency stream
This visa stream lets you come to Australia for specific activities. You could work in Australia as a representative of a foreign government agency or employed by a foreign government as a foreign language teacher in an Australian school. - Domestic Worker (Diplomatic or Consular) stream
This visa stream lets a person aged 18 years or older do temporary full-time domestic work in Australia in the household of someone who holds a Diplomatic (Temporary) visa (subclass 995). - Privileges and Immunities stream
This visa stream lets you come to Australia if you have, or expect to have, privileges and immunities under relevant legislation. You can stay in Australia on this visa while you are working as an international representative. - Pacific Australia Labour Mobility stream
This visa stream lets you come to Australia to participate in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme.
You must only intend to have a genuine intention to stay temporarily in Australia and do the work or activity you specified in your visa application.
Temporary Activity Visa (subclass 408)
This visa allows you to come to Australia to do specific types of work on a short-term, temporary basis.
The following are the major streams of the Temporary Activity visa (subclass 408):
- Invited participant in an event
- Sports trainee
- Elite player, coach, instructor or adjudicator visa allows you to play, coach, instructor adjudicate for an Australian team or do high level sports training with a sporting organisation. You and your family can stay in Australia for up to 2 years.
- Religious worker visa lets you do full-time religious work for a religious institution in Australia. You and your family who apply for the visa with you can stay here for up to 2 years.
- Domestic worker visa lets you come to Australia to do full-time domestic work in the household of certain senior foreign executives. You and members of your family unit can stay here for up to 2 years.
- Superyacht crew
- Research visa lets you observe or take part in a research project at a research or tertiary institution in Australia. You and your family who apply for the visa with you can stay here for up to 2 years.
- Research (student)
- Staff exchange
- Youth exchange program
- School to School Interchange program
- School Language Assistants program
- Other programs
- Workplace justice
- Australian Government endorsed event visa lets you come to Australia to participate in events endorsed by the Australian Government
- Performing in film or television production subsidised by government
- Performing in film or television production not subsidised by government
- Performing in productions not related to film or television
- Production roles other than as a performer
- Support staff for profit
- Non‑profit engagements
- Documentary program or commercial for overseas market
You can’t use our temporary visa program to maintain ongoing residency in Australia.
You generally cannot extend your stay in Australia beyond 4 years by applying for this visa.
You must satisfy that you have a genuine intention to stay here temporarily.
Department of Home Affairs (DOHA) will assess following under GTE:
- Your situation
- Your immigration history
- Previous compliance with visa conditions
- Any other relevant matter
Training Visa (subclass 407)
This visa allows you to take part in workplace-based occupational training activities to improve your skills for your job, area of tertiary study, field of expertise or in a professional development training program in Australia.
This visa is intended for individuals who need to obtain structured workplace-based training to enhance their skills in their current occupation, area of tertiary study, or field of expertise and are required to complete a professional development training program.
In this visa, the types of training covered are listed below:
- Workplace-based occupational training is for individuals who need structured training to meet occupational registration or licensing requirements.
- Training to improve skills in an occupation is for individuals working in certain sectors or industries to improve their skills.
- Professional development training programs: for overseas employers sending employees to participate in tailored professional development programs in Australia.
This visa is generally valid for up to 2 years. However, the specific duration depends on the type of training you will be undertaking.
Approved Nomination
Your sponsor must have nominated you to participate in a program of occupational training unless your sponsor is an Australian Commonwealth Government agency.
Nomination requirements are different depending on the purpose or type of training.
There are 3 types of occupational training covered by this visa:
- Occupational training required for registration
- Occupational training to improve skills in an eligible occupation
- Occupational training for capacity building overseas. This includes overseas qualification, government support or professional.
Bringing Family
You can include family members (such as a partner or children) in your visa application.
Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE)
You must only intend to:
- Stay temporarily in Australia
- Do the things you are allowed to do on this visa
- You must have substantially complied with the conditions of the last substantive or subsequent bridging visa that you held.
Adequate Health Insurance
You are personally liable for all your healthcare costs while you are in Australia. Medical insurance helps limit your financial liability. You must maintain adequate health cover for the whole of your stay if you are granted this visa. Your insurance should cover you for medically necessary treatment, including transport.
Funding Trip
You will need to show evidence of your financial capacity to support yourself and your family while you are in Australia.
Evidence of English Language
You must have functional English language skills to undertake the training programme.
