Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485)
A temporary visa that allows international students to live, study and work after you have finished your studies.
In Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), there are following streams:
- Post-Higher Education Work stream
This visa is for international students who have recently graduated with a degree from an Australian institution.
- Post-Vocational Education Work stream
This visa is for international students who have recently graduated with qualifications that are relevant to specific occupations Australia needs.
Length of Stay
This is a temporary visa. The length of your stay in Australia will depend on the level of your Australian study qualification.
- Bachelor degree (including honours) – 2 years
- Masters (coursework and extended) – 2 years
- Masters (research) – 3 years
- Doctoral degree – 3 years.
Department of Home Affairs (DOHA) will determine the stay period for graduate certificates or graduate diplomas by the course they were packaged with.
The length of stay for Indian nationals, as agreed in the Australia India – Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA), is as follows:
- Bachelor degree (including honours) – 2 years
- Bachelor degree (with first class honours in STEM, including ICT) – 3 years
- Masters (coursework, extended and research) – 3 years
- Doctoral degrees (PhD) – 4 years.
Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders may stay up to 5 years.
The visa starts on the date we grant your visa.
Further Extend Visa
You cannot extend this visa.
You may be eligible to apply for a Second Post-Higher Education Work stream visa.
Age Limit
The following are the age limit for different streams:
- Post-Higher Education Work stream
DOHA has reduced the maximum eligible age for Post-Vocational Education Work stream applicants to 35 years of age or under at the time of application.Applicants under 50 years of age are still eligible if you hold a Hong Kong or British National Overseas passport.
- Post-Vocational Education Work stream
DOHA has reduced the maximum eligible age for Post-Higher Education Work stream applicants to 35 years of age or under at the time of application.
Applicants under 50 years of age are still eligible if you are using a Masters (research) or Doctoral Degree (PhD) to meet the Australian study requirement or hold a Hong Kong or British National Overseas passport. - Second Post-Higher Education Work stream
DOHA has reduced the maximum eligible age for Second Post-Higher Education Work stream applicants to 35 years of age or under at the time of application.Applicants under 50 years of age are still eligible if you used a Masters (research) or Doctoral Degree (PhD) to meet the requirements for the grant of their Post-Higher Education Work or Post-Study Work stream visa or hold a Hong Kong or British National Overseas passport.
